Parkinson's Disease Physiotherapy.
Parkinson's changes how you move, but the right exercise can make a real difference. Our physiotherapists build targeted programs to improve your walking, balance and confidence. Treatment is available at our Capalaba clinic or in your own home.
Parkinson's affects everyone differently, so there's no one-size-fits-all program. We start with a detailed assessment of your walking, balance, strength and daily tasks, then build an exercise plan around your symptoms and goals. Sessions are available at our Capalaba clinic or through our mobile service across Greater Brisbane and South-East Queensland.
What Is Parkinson's Disease?
Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological condition caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. It mainly affects movement, causing tremor, stiffness, slowness, and changes to balance and walking. Symptoms and rate of change vary widely from person to person.
Exercise is one of the most important parts of managing Parkinson's. Physiotherapy gives you a structured, targeted program to keep you moving well and living independently for longer. We offer it at our Capalaba clinic or in your home.
How Physiotherapy Helps
| Symptom | How We Help |
|---|---|
| Slowness of movement (bradykinesia) | High-effort, large-amplitude movement training to restore speed and size of movement |
| Stiffness (rigidity) | Mobility, stretching, and trunk rotation exercises to keep joints and spine moving |
| Walking changes | Step length and cadence training, cueing strategies, and walking practice in real settings |
| Freezing of gait | Visual, auditory, and attention-based strategies to start and keep walking |
| Balance and falls | Progressive balance training and home safety advice to reduce fall risk |
| Posture | Extension and postural exercises to counter a stooped posture |
| Strength and fitness | Progressive resistance and aerobic exercise tailored to your stage and goals |
Our Approach
Parkinson's: Common Questions
When should I start physiotherapy for Parkinson's?
As early as possible after diagnosis. Starting early helps you build strength and good movement habits before symptoms progress, and gives you a baseline to track changes over time.
How often should I see a physio for Parkinson's?
It depends on your stage and goals. Many people start with weekly sessions to set up their program, then move to fortnightly or monthly reviews alongside a daily home exercise routine.
Can physiotherapy slow down Parkinson's?
Physiotherapy can't cure Parkinson's, but regular, targeted exercise is strongly recommended to help maintain mobility, balance, and independence. Many people find they move and function better with an ongoing program.
Do you offer home visits for Parkinson's?
Yes. Our mobile physiotherapists visit homes across Greater Brisbane and South-East Queensland, which also lets us assess fall hazards in your own environment.
Is Parkinson's physiotherapy covered by NDIS or Medicare?
It can be. We are a registered NDIS provider, and Medicare rebates are available with a GP chronic condition management plan. We also accept DVA and private health insurance.
