GLA:D Program: Evidence-Based Relief for Knee & Hip Osteoarthritis
Moov Physio — Capalaba Clinic
If knee or hip osteoarthritis is starting to affect the things you love doing, GLA:D offers a structured, research-backed path forward — without jumping straight to surgery. Here's how the program works at Moov Physio Capalaba.
What Is GLA:D?
GLA:D stands for Good Life with osteoArthritis: Denmark. It's an internationally recognised education and exercise program specifically designed for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms — regardless of how severe your X-ray changes are. The program combines patient education with supervised, progressive group exercise to build strength, confidence and control around the joint.

Is GLA:D Right for You?
GLA:D may suit you if you're experiencing ongoing hip or knee pain or stiffness consistent with osteoarthritis — including if you're already considering surgery. You don't need an X-ray or GP referral to get started. Your physiotherapist will assess whether your symptoms fit a typical osteoarthritis pattern, or whether another treatment pathway would serve you better.
How the Program Works
| Stage | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Individual assessment | Baseline measures of pain, function, strength and mobility with your physiotherapist |
| 2. Education sessions | Two sessions covering what osteoarthritis is, risk factors, and self-management strategies |
| 3. Supervised group exercise | Twice-weekly sessions over six weeks, building strength, joint control and functional movement |
| 4. Three-month review | Reassessment of your progress and goals with your physiotherapist |
GLA:D: Common Questions
Do I need an X-ray to join?
No. GLA:D is based on your symptoms and a clinical assessment, not imaging.
How long does the program run for?
Six weeks in total — two education sessions, then supervised group exercise twice a week, followed by a three-month review.
Can it help me avoid surgery?
GLA:D isn't a guaranteed alternative to surgery, but research shows many participants report reduced pain and improved function, and some no longer feel they need surgery 12 months on.
Is it covered by Medicare or private health?
Sessions are billed as standard physiotherapy consultations, which may be claimable under a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan, private health extras, or DVA depending on your circumstances.
